Discriminants.

So, On friday Mr.P we learned about Discriminants, which is another way to say: how many times does this function cross the X-Axis? You can calculate a formula to find out the Discriminants. This Formula is: b² − 4ac. If you plug in your A,B and C values you get a value.

  • If the value is Positive: The function crosses twice. (We use the term "Roots" for discriminants, so if the value is positive we have two "Roots")
  • If the Value is Negative: The function does not cross the X-Axis. So we have a Root of 0.
  • If the value is 0: The function touches the X-Axis. So we have a Root of 1.
Hopefully this will help you out in the coming months.
