February 28, 11

Hello friends!! Charlene here... or Chacha.

So.... recap on what we did in class today, we pretty much completed Unit 1 (in our booklet) with word problems. Connecting algebraic and graphical transformations of a quadratic function by first, completing the square. We practiced completing the square by converting general form into vertex form by using variables instead of numbers.

f(x)=ax squared + bx + c ( Yah..Sorry in advance I'm not sure how to do that formula link thing....so just bare with me)
LOVED IT! ... No just kidding... I was honestly a little bit confused..but i understand it now.
ANYWAYS... we also did a number of different examples, such as the example with the fence around a backyard. By first drawing the scenario, then doing your calculations from there.

To find the area we did this:
A = L.W
L = x
W = 120 - 2x

A= x(120-2x)
A= 120-2x squared
A= -2x squared + 120

We then used this formula to find the value of x:

x = -b over 2a
x= -120 over 2(-2)
x=-120 over -4
x=30

Another example we did in class today was quite different than the one above. We found two numbers whose sum is 20 and whose product is a maximum.

Let x be one #
The other # is 20-x
Product = x(20-x)
Product= 20x-x squared
Product= -x squared = 20x

Then we did the same thing as the previous example and used the same formula to find the x value.

x= -b over 2a
x= -20 over 2(-1)
x=-20 over -2
x= 10

And yeah...... its almost 10 o clock pm, im tired. GOODNIGHT PRECAL BUDDIES :) Have a good first day of March tomorrow :) And dont forget to do the hall of fame thing (haha) Mr. P asked us to do!
